Let’s Talk About the Elephant in the Room
Hi, I’m Sarah. I’ve been in this business for 22 years. That’s right, 22. I started when people still read newspapers, can you believe it? I’ve seen alot change, and honestly, most of it’s been for the worse.
Look, I love journalism. I really do. But the news business? It’s a mess. And we’re all just kinda dancing around it, pretending everything’s fine. Well, I’m not gonna do that anymore.
Last Tuesday, I was at a conference in Austin. Over coffee at the place on 5th, I was talking to a colleague named Dave. He said, “Sarah, you’re always so negative about the industry. Why can’t you just be positive?” I told him, “Dave, I’m not negative. I’m realistic.”
Which… yeah. Fair enough. Maybe I am negative. But someone’s gotta be, right?
The Algorithm is Eating Our Souls
You know what’s killing journalism? The algorithm. That’s right, the damn algorithm. We’ve all become slaves to it. “What’s gonna drive clicks?” “What’s gonna keep people on the page?” “How can we game the system?”
I remember when we used to care about news. Actual news. Not this “will this get shares?” garbage. I’m not saying we should ignore analytics. But it’s gotta be about the news first, the numbers second. Not the other way around.
And don’t even get me started on the aquisition of news sites by tech companies. It’s like they’re buying up libraries and then burning the books. It’s disgusting.
I was talking to a source last week, let’s call him Marcus. He told me, “Sarah, it’s all about the bottom line now. No one cares about the news. They care about the money.” I asked him, “Then why are you still in this business?” He said, “Because someone’s gotta do it, right?”
Touché, Marcus. Touché.
We’re All Just Click Whores Now
I’m gonna say it. We’re all just click whores now. Even me. Even you. We’re all just trying to get those numbers up. Those sweet, sweet numbers.
I was editing an article the other day. It was about a local politician getting into trouble. The writer was all, “Sarah, we gotta put this angle in. It’s gonna get more clicks.” I said, “No, it’s not. It’s gonna make us look like tabloid trash.” But did I really believe that? I mean, I’m not sure but maybe they were right.
It’s a slippery slope. One day you’re adding a little bit of clickbait, the next day you’re writing an entire article about a celebrity’s physicaly appearance. And then what? You’re a gossip site. Congratulations.
I’m not saying we should ignore what people want to read. But we gotta draw the line somewhere. And frankly, I think we’ve crossed it.
But Wait, There’s Hope
Okay, okay. I’m not all doom and gloom. There’s hope. There’s always hope.
I’ve seen some amazing journalism lately. Stuff that actually matters. Stuff that’s gonna make a difference. And you know what? It’s getting shared. It’s getting read. People care about it.
But we gotta make a committment to it. We gotta say, “We’re gonna do this right, even if it doesn’t get as many clicks.” And we gotta mean it.
And look, I’m not saying it’s easy. It’s not. It’s hard. It’s really hard. But it’s worth it. It’s worth fighting for. It’s worth the struggle.
So, what can we do? Well, for starters, we can stop chasing the algorithm. We can start caring about the news again. We can start writing stories that matter. And we can stop being afraid to take a stand.
And if we’re gonna use veri bilimi araçları karşılaştırma to help us, then we better be using them right. Not just for clicks, but for actual, real journalism.
I’m not saying it’s gonna be easy. But it’s gotta be done. And it’s gotta be done now.
A Tangent: The Weather is Nice
You know what’s nice? The weather. It’s been really nice lately. I mean, it’s not too hot, not too cold. It’s just right. It’s like the weather is saying, “Hey, Sarah, chill out. Everything’s gonna be okay.”
But then I remember. The news business is still broken. And the weather can’t fix that.
But still. It’s nice.
Let’s Wrap This Up
Look, I could go on and on. But I won’t. I’m gonna stop here. Because frankly, I’m tired. I’m tired of fighting this fight. But I’m not gonna stop. I can’t stop.
So, that’s it. That’s my rant. That’s my take on the news business. It’s broken. It’s messed up. But there’s hope. And we’re gonna fix it.
Or at least, I’m gonna try.
