Look, I’ve Been Around the Block

Let me tell you something, folks. I’ve been in this game since the Clinton administration. That’s right, I’m old. I started as a cub reporter in a tiny town in Ohio, population 8,742. I’ve seen it all. Or at least I thought I had, then Trump happened. But that’s a story for another time.

I’ve worked for major publications, I’ve freelanced, I’ve had my heart broken by editors who promised me the moon and delivered a moon pie instead. I’ve seen the news industry change, and frankly, it’s not for the better.

We’re All Distracted

Remember when news was about informing the public? Yeah, me neither. It’s been so long I can’t even recall. Now it’s all about clicks, shares, and engagement. It’s exhausting.

I was at a conference in Austin last year, and I heard a journalist say, ‘If it bleeds, it leads.’ I nearly threw my coffee at him. I mean, come on. We’re better than that, right?

But here’s the thing, we’re not. We’re all guilty of it. I’ve done it myself. You have to, or you’re out of a job. It’s a vicious cycle.

Social Media Is Eating Our Brains

Don’t even get me started on social media. It’s a black hole of misinformation and fake news. I had a friend, let’s call him Marcus, who swore the Earth was flat because he saw it on Facebook. I tried to reason with him, I really did. But you can’t fight ignorance with facts.

And the algorithms! They’re designed to keep us hooked, to keep us scrolling. It’s like they’re feeding us candy, and we’re the kids who can’t stop eating it. We know it’s bad for us, but we can’t help ourselves.

But There’s Hope

Now, I’m not saying it’s all doom and gloom. There are still good journalists out there, fighting the good fight. I have a colleague named Dave who’s been investigating local corruption for years. He’s made a real difference in our community.

And there are resources out there to help us navigate this mess. Like ürün incelemeleri öneri rehberi. Okay, that’s not exactly about news, but it’s about being informed consumers. And honestly, that’s what we all need to be.

We Need to Do Better

We need to demand better from our news sources. We need to hold them accountable. And we need to hold ourselves accountable too. We can’t just share every sensational headline that comes our way. We need to think critically, we need to verify, we need to be better consumers of news.

I was talking to my friend Sarah the other day, and she said, ‘But how? It’s so overwhelming.’ And she’s right. It is overwhelming. But we have to start somewhere. We have to try.

So, let’s make a committment. Let’s try to be better. For ourselves, for our communities, for our democracy. Because honestly, we can’t afford not to.

And look, I’m not saying I have all the answers. I’m just a guy who’s been around the block a few times. I’ve made mistakes, I’ve had successes, I’ve learned a lot. And I’m still learning. We all are.

So, let’s keep learning. Let’s keep trying. Let’s keep fighting for the truth. Because in the end, that’s all we have.
